Horse Trekking
If there is one country where it is truly worthwhile to slow down to the rhythm of a horseback ride, Kyrgyzstan will help you forget all the worries of modern life.
If there is one country where it is truly worthwhile to slow down to the rhythm of a horseback ride, Kyrgyzstan will help you forget all the worries of modern life.
The horse is for Kyrgyzstan inseparable from the country's economic life and identity. As in many Central Asian countries, it was and remains an essential element for traveling across Kyrgyzstan's mountainous territory, while also serving as a symbol of social status.
As in other Central Asian countries, children still learn to ride horses from a very young age. The horse is also a source of life for the Kyrgyz people, as mares produce fermented milk, called Koumiss, a traditional beverage consumed for centuries. It is also a source of joy, being used in national celebrations. Moreover, the horse has been revered since antiquity and is a symbol of the country.
Today, the horses found in Kyrgyzstan come from six breeds raised throughout the country. The Kyrgyz saddle horse had nearly disappeared due to the communist desire to ban this robust and enduring breed, which nomadic herders had used as their mount for centuries. It holds a prominent place in Kyrgyz history, with songs, stories, and poems dedicated to it.
Since 2004, thanks to the initiative of French horse specialist Jacqueline Ripart, the Kyrgyz Ate foundation has been rehabilitating this endemic horse breed and ancestral equestrian traditions. A festival dedicated to it takes place in the Pamir Massif in the south of the country.
Immersing yourself in the ancient times of nomadic tribes, feeling in harmony with nature – these are sensations that can only be truly experienced through horse trekking at the heart of mountain passes, massifs, and valleys.
Horseback trekking remains moreover one of the safest forms of travel in the country, especially on mountain trails where vehicles would struggle to pass.
Becoming one with your horse, taking time to stop and appreciate the country's natural beauty – this is exactly the experience we can offer you on the ground!
