Bokonbayevo is a small town of 12,500 inhabitants situated on the banks of Lake Issyk-Kul, 160 km from Karakol and 280 km from Bishkek. The town takes its name from a Kyrgyz poet.

A Brief History

Bokonbayevo experienced a golden era during the Soviet period, which brought full employment to the region.

Today, the town faces significant unemployment challenges, and many industries have shuttered. Residents have returned to traditional agricultural practices to sustain their livelihoods.

Despite its unpretentious appearance, this small settlement rewards a night's stay. The town serves as a perfect base for trekking into the hinterland, particularly among the peaks and valleys to the south.

This high-altitude village, perched at 1,800 meters above sea level, offers visitors a museum and echoes of its Soviet past—notably a Lenin bust with hammer and sickle, and a war memorial. A recently constructed mosque now anchors the town at the corner of Atakan and Turusbekova streets, reflecting one of the region's dominant faiths. The small local museum proudly displays paintings by regional artists depicting manashi (traditional hunters), eagle falconers, and other scenes of daily life.

For those interested in craftsmanship, Bokonbayevo is home to a small local artisanal workshop producing shyrdaks (felt carpets) and other felt products. You can stop by to witness traditional manufacturing techniques and purchase authentic felt pieces.

During peak tourist season, the town hosts the Eagle Hunting Festival. Falconers from across the region gather in Bokonbayevo to showcase their craft and perform demonstrations.

However, Bokonbayevo's real draw for travelers lies in its surrounding wilderness—the Terskey Ala-Too mountain range, hot springs, waterfalls, and the crystalline lake itself. Several guesthouses and yurt camps have been established along Lake Issyk-Kul's shores, offering a chance to unwind in an exceptional setting while immersing yourself in Kyrgyz culture and traditions. You can easily take a dip in the lake or try your hand at fishing. As evening falls, relax by the fire and enjoy traditional Kyrgyz songs.

This still-remote region is a gem for mountaineers and trekking enthusiasts. Many peaks remain untouched by human footsteps and bear no names.

Three buses depart from Bishkek's West Bus Station for Bokonbayevo. Buses leave once full and take approximately 4 hours to reach the village.
