A land of mountains, Kyrgyzstan is one of the world's most beautiful countries for trekking! With over 90% of its territory covered by mountains, including three peaks above 7,000 meters in elevation, Kyrgyzstan offers a spectacular and pristine landscape for adventurers.

In Kyrgyzstan, nature remains genuinely wild. During your treks, you'll often have the chance to encounter wildlife, and perhaps a few nomads in their yurts. Some trails are marked, but they remain quite rare—notably the paths in Ala Archa National Park and the trek leading to Ala Kul Lake. Most of the time, you'll need to navigate using GPS, a map, or better yet, with an experienced local guide.

Kyrgyzstan offers endless possibilities for trekking, suited to all levels. You can undertake treks of varying lengths, alternating between valleys, gorges, canyons, peaks, lakes, and glaciers. Keep in mind that Kyrgyzstan is generally very high altitude. You'll climb quickly during your treks, so acclimatization always requires careful attention.

The trek to Ala Kul Lake, the trek to the Khan Tengri Peak Base Camp, or the trek to the Ak-Sai Glacier are among the country's finest. That said, Kyrgyzstan offers a magnificent diversity of landscapes and colors, making it difficult to prefer one region over another: the Ala Too Mountains, the Pamir, the Alay range, the Issyk Kul region, Sary Chelek Lake, and the Talas steppes, among others, all offer sublime treks in Kyrgyzstan.

Of course, you can also take shorter day hikes or embark on horseback trekking through the Kyrgyz valleys.

The best season for trekking in Kyrgyzstan stretches from June to September. For higher passes, July and August are preferable. It's possible to hire guides and porters for your treks for added safety or comfort. It's never wise to venture into the mountains alone. In any case, inform someone of your itinerary before you depart.
