While summer is the best season to visit Kyrgyzstan, winter in Kyrgyzstan is a magnificent period for adventurers and winter sports enthusiasts. A land of high peaks, covered over 90% in mountains with three summits beyond 7,000m in altitude, Kyrgyzstan is the ideal destination for skiing or snowboarding, among other activities. In winter, the country transforms into a true fairy tale. Blanketed in white, Kyrgyzstan becomes entirely a perfect playground for winter sports.

Kyrgyzstan is an ideal destination for both beginners and professionals. Several well-equipped ski resorts allow you to enjoy excellent snow conditions. Many of them are close to Bishkek, accessible for a day trip near the Kyrgyz capital. But the country's largest ski resort is located in Karakol. Situated at high altitude, the Karakol resort even offers breathtaking views over Lake Issyk-Kul!

The ski resorts are admittedly much smaller than those in the Alps, for example. However, they allow you to enjoy powder snow, excellent slope conditions, and fewer crowds. You can rent skis or a snowboard if needed.

If you prefer backcountry skiing, there is plenty to explore! Kyrgyzstan is a freeride paradise. You can do it almost anywhere in the country. Certain regions are developed for off-piste skiing, such as the Jyrgalan Valley or Soussamyr Valley. In winter, it is then possible to stay in heated yurts in nomadic fashion, and book horseback rides, snowmobile excursions, or CatSki ascents. All at very reasonable prices, in magnificent and wild scenery, and with welcoming service providers.

In winter, you can also explore the country by ski touring. This allows you to venture into mountains in isolated areas, otherwise inaccessible. It's best to hire a local guide to avoid getting lost.

There are also numerous other winter sports to enjoy in Kyrgyzstan. To name just a few: snowshoeing, ice quad biking, ice climbing, dog sledding, horseback riding… And if you come in winter, you can enjoy all the usual Kyrgyz cultural activities and benefit from being among the only tourists to meet locals who will shower you with their kindness…
