Bishkek
Capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek blends wide Soviet avenues, lush parks and vibrant local atmosphere at the gateway to the Tien Shan.
Bishkek is the capital of the Kyrgyz Republic. Situated in the Chui Valley, at the foot of the Tien Shan mountain range, this major city is typically the first stop for most travelers. Yet few linger long, despite its considerable charms. Take the time to explore it.
A Glimpse into History
Bishkek's location was originally nothing more than a waypoint along the Silk Road. In 1825, the Khan of Kokand had a fort built here to control the caravan routes and accommodate Kyrgyz tribes. This fortress was conquered and destroyed by Russian forces in 1862, and in 1868, its ruins served as the foundation for the first buildings of Pichpek, a city destined for rapid growth.
In 1925, the autonomous Kara-Kyrgyz region was established within Russian Turkestan. In 1926, Pichpek was renamed Frunze by Soviet authorities in honor of military commander Mikhail Vasilievich Frunze, before becoming, in 1936, the capital of the Kyrgyz Soviet Socialist Republic.
Only in 1992, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Kyrgyzstan's emergence as a sovereign state, did the Kyrgyz parliament change the capital's name back to Bishkek.
Discovering Bishkek
Bishkek offers several attractions to occupy you before venturing into Kyrgyzstan's nomadic lands.
Soviet influence is deeply visible, particularly in the architecture and urban planning with its massive concrete apartment blocks and exceptionally wide, straight avenues. Government buildings and war monuments stand as powerful reminders of Russian occupation. Yet you'll notice the elegant contrast provided by neoclassical structures such as the National Opera and Ballet Theatre and certain university buildings.
In the city center, Ala-Too Square, adorned with fountains, allows you to witness the changing of the guard, the goose-step march before the national flag, before visiting some of the city's major museums. The Historical Museum traces the country's story from the Neolithic era to the present day, revealing an impressive collection of Soviet propaganda art, while the Museum of Fine Arts showcases beautiful exhibitions of felt carpets, embroideries and paintings.
If you're ready to immerse yourself in the crowds, head to the legendary Osh Bazaar. Colorful and teeming with activity, this sprawling market offers an authentic glimpse into Kyrgyz life and culture. The smiles and vibrant atmosphere will give you a first impression of the locals' remarkable warmth. Do watch out for pickpockets, however, who see tourists as easy targets.
Bishkek is also renowned as one of the world's greenest capitals (with 100 square meters of green space per capita). You can verify this by strolling along the beautifully tree-lined Erkindik Avenue (Freedom Avenue) or visiting Dubovy Park, which shelters charming sculptures beneath towering oaks.
In the evening, treat yourself to an unforgettable experience by attending a ballet performance or Russian opera. If you're a classical music enthusiast, the Philharmonic Concert Hall is your destination. Alternatively, opt for the far more relaxed atmosphere of Panfilov Park, where locals flock on summer evenings to savor skewers and ice cream amid impromptu karaoke sessions and rides under the stars.
Bishkek has an airport located approximately 25 km from the city. Manas International Airport is the country's main gateway and receives flights from Mongolia, Turkey, Russia, China, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
Bishkek has two main bus stations. The East Bus Terminal serves minibuses to various destinations around the city, while long-distance buses connect all regions of the country. There's also a twice-weekly train service from Bishkek to Moscow, with 2 and 4-berth compartments and a dining car.
