At 3,000 m altitude in the Tian Shan, Son Koul Lake is the summer gathering place for Kyrgyz nomadic herders. Yurts, horses, starlit skies.

Located at approximately 3,000 metres altitude in the Tian Shan massif in the north-west of Naryn, Son Koul Lake offers a wonderful opportunity to trek on foot or horseback through breathtaking landscapes, dotted with a few nomads tending their herds.

A gem in the heart of the Tian Shan

With an area of 275 km² and a depth of 15 metres, this stunning high-altitude blue lake is considered the country's largest natural freshwater reserve. Frozen for half the year, its surroundings are barren and only welcome herders and their livestock during the summer season, from June to September.

Surrounded by mountains whose peaks can rise beyond 4,000 metres, these pure and tranquil waters unfold in a magnificent setting, the realm of numerous bird species but also of a few wolves, foxes, marmots and snow leopards.

The attractions of a trek to Son Koul Lake

Many are drawn to discover this vast freshwater lake, and for good reason! Surrounded by sprawling plains where herds graze peacefully, the azure lake sparkles beneath snow-capped peaks. Far removed from any urbanisation, this most magnificent landscape where nature evolves at its own pace seems to have frozen time.

Beyond offering a fabulous panorama to all trekkers, Son Koul Lake promises unforgettable human encounters during the summer season, when its shores welcome the yurt camps of nomads who have arrived with their livestock to enjoy the green pastures. This is an opportunity to spend one or more nights in these authentic dwellings and share unique moments with the herders.

Sometimes, at sunset, the lake is veiled in a striking icy mist and reveals an entirely different face. When night falls, astronomy enthusiasts are in their element beneath an incredibly starlit sky.

The verdant shores of the lake promise lovely walks. You will surely encounter a few families, and some may even offer you a boat ride.

During your stay at Son Koul Lake, do not miss the opportunity to observe the numerous bird species that share the plateau with a few wild animals and the herds.

Trekking departures on foot or horseback to Son Koul Lake generally depart from Naryn.

The paths taken through mountains and valleys easily carry you forward until you discover the lake.

You can also reach it by car; from Naryn, Kochkor or Kyzyl-Oi.
