The Achik-Tash base camp is the gathering point for climbers tackling Lenin Peak (7,134 m), one of the most accessible summits among the 7,000-meter peaks of Central Asia. Set at 4,000 meters altitude on the Achik-Tash plateau in the Trans-Alai range, it also welcomes travellers who want to behold the giant without undertaking the ascent.

Why stay here

Achik-Tash is first and foremost an expedition base camp. Several specialist agencies operate there during the climbing season, and the site serves as an acclimatization stage before moving to higher camps. But it also appeals to trekkers: from the plateau, you can observe Lenin Peak face-on, and the surrounding valleys offer accessible high-altitude walks, set against pastures and Kyrgyz herds settled for the summer.

Atmosphere

The camp consists of aligned tents and a few yurts, set in a grassy cirque surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Life revolves around the large dining tent where international climbers, guides and trekkers gather. Evenings are cool even in high summer, and the high-altitude sky remains one of the most impressive in the region. The atmosphere is studious and fraternal: people prepare their gear, discuss routes and weather.

Accommodation and services

You sleep in a two-person tent, equipped with beds, insulated sleeping bags and an extra blanket. Each tent has electric lighting and a power source.

On-site, the camp offers a rare range of services at this altitude:

• Small supply shop
• Sauna and hot shower
• Disco and bar (beer and spirits)
• Satellite phone and television
• Wifi in the dining tent and around the station

Meals are served in a large communal tent. You'll regularly enjoy plov, a traditional dish of rice and meat, accompanied by tea, coffee and hot drinks. Full board is usually included in the nightly rate, along with hot water for washing.

A rescue team is present at all times during the season: doctor, experienced climbers and qualified rescuers provide assistance to alpinists in difficulty at altitude.

Location and access

The camp is located on the Achik-Tash plateau, in southern Kyrgyzstan, at the foot of Lenin Peak's north face. Access is by four-wheel-drive vehicle: expect around 1 hour from Sary Mogol, the last village before the climb, and about 3 hours from Osh, the major city of southern Kyrgyzstan. From Bishkek, the journey is long and usually involves a domestic flight to Osh.

When to visit

The camp opens only during the climbing season, June to September. July and August are the busiest months, when the weather window allows summit attempts. In June and September, the camp is quieter but conditions are harsher.

Nearby

Sary Mogol, an hour's drive away, is a typical Kyrgyz village in the Alai valley. Further east, the road leads towards the Tajik border and the Pamir Highway. To head north after your expedition, several stages are possible: Kochkor at the foot of the central mountains, Karakol near Issyk-Kul lake, or Chon Kemin for a rural stop before Bishkek.
