At Aigul's, a yurt camp in the heart of Semionovka valley

On the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, in the Semionovka valley, near Kirchin, you are welcomed under the yurt of a Kyrgyz herding family. Settled here from April to October, Aigul and her family live to the rhythm of their horses and share their daily life with passing travelers.

The atmosphere under the yurt

You sleep in a traditional yurt, either on the ground on thick carpets and mattresses as is customary, or in beds if you prefer more comfort. The sanitary facilities are external and basic: you must embrace this element of rusticity, which is part of the experience.

Days are organized around the family's activities. You watch horses leaving for and returning from pastures, you exchange with herders over tea, and the cool mountain evenings send everyone back quickly to the yurt, near the stove.

Family table and kumys

Home cooking is based on local ingredients: bread baked on site, hearty soups, lamb dishes, dairy products from the herd. It is simple, abundant, and representative of what people actually eat in the jailoo.

Kumys is a specialty of the place. This national drink made from fermented mare's milk is particularly prized in spring, when mares produce milk considered more revitalizing. Prepared from the milk of valley mares, it offers a freshness you won't find in town. Tangy taste, slightly fizzy: worth trying without prejudice.

Observing horses in the surrounding pastures is part of daily life, and herders are happy to explain their work to interested visitors.

Location

The camp is located in the Semionovka valley, on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, near the village of Kirchin. The access track climbs toward alpine pastures, through a landscape of grassy slopes and ridges rising above 3,000 meters. Expect several hours of driving from Bishkek, generally combined with other stops around the lake.

When to stay

The camp is open April to October only, the period when the family moves to their summer pastures. Outside these months, the yurts are dismantled and herders return to the lowlands.

• June-August: high season, ideal for hiking and horseback riding
• September-October: autumn colors, quieter crowds, bring warm clothing
