Guesthouse and yurt camp run by Aytbek and his family in Bokonbayevo, on the south shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. Eagle hunting, komuz, and Kyrgyz cuisine.

Chez Aytbek, Kyrgyz Hospitality in Bokonbayevo

At the foot of the mountain foothills lining the south shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, Aytbek's guesthouse and yurt camp welcome travelers to Bokonbayevo. Here, there is no standardized reception desk: Aytbek and his family receive you in their home, around their farm and livestock, in a village that remains one of the cradles of Kyrgyz nomadic tradition.

Why Choose This Destination

Three elements set this stay apart from a conventional hotel stop:

  • A berkutchi family: Aytbek practices eagle hunting, a skill passed down through generations in this region. He offers falconry demonstrations with his bird of prey.
  • Music shared: in the evening, over meals, Aytbek plays the komuz, the three-stringed instrument emblematic of Kyrgyzstan, and sings traditional songs.
  • Choice of accommodation: the family home or the yurt camp set up nearby, depending on the season and your preferences.

Atmosphere and Life on the Ground

The property runs at the rhythm of the farm. The family raises sheep and horses, cultivates and prepares meals with their own produce. Cuisine is family-style, Kyrgyz, with no menus or hotel hours: you eat what comes from Aytbek's kitchen, often communally. Travelers share living spaces with the family, which requires a certain simplicity in comfort but offers direct access to rural daily life.

Inside the traditional yurt, you sleep on thick carpets, under felt blankets, in a circular structure heated by a central stove. In the house, bedrooms are simple and clean, for guest use.

Activities and Services Offered

  • Demonstration of eagle hunting with Aytbek
  • Musical evening around the komuz and Kyrgyz songs
  • Family meals prepared at the farm
  • Possibility of horseback rides in the surrounding area (to be arranged with the family)
  • Starting point for excursions to Skazka and Barskoon canyons

Location: Bokonbayevo and South Issyk-Kul

Bokonbayevo sits on the south shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, one of the world's largest high-altitude lakes. This shore, less frequented than the north shore, retains a rural character and preserves traditions of herding and falconry. Allow approximately 6 to 7 hours of driving from Bishkek, or half a day from Karakol traveling along the lake. To prepare your itinerary, consult our Bokonbayevo guide.

When to Visit

The yurt camp operates mainly from May to September, when temperatures allow comfortable sleeping under felt. The guesthouse can accommodate visitors outside this season, but the high season (June to August) remains the most relevant period: outdoor falconry demonstrations, open jaïloos (summer pastures), lake at swimming temperature.

Combine With Other Stops

This property fits well into a broader Kyrgyz circuit. For comparable immersion in another region, see the Chon Kemin guesthouse or the one in Karakol, at the opposite end of Issyk-Kul. For an urban stop on arrival or departure, the Grand Hotel in Bishkek remains a practical option.
