Passing through Bishkek, or working in Kyrgyzstan's capital and looking for a break? Numerous outings are possible from Bishkek, a human-scale capital set against a backdrop of mountains... Less than thirty minutes' drive from the city center lie mountains soaring to nearly 5,000 meters altitude, and countless valleys for rest or hiking. Here is our selection of day trips near Kyrgyzstan's capital:

The Burana Historical Complex

Burana is among the unmissable sites during a stay in Kyrgyzstan. This ancient minaret, located near the town of Tokmok about an hour from Bishkek, is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and allows you to travel back through centuries and explore Kyrgyz history at a glance. The complex once housed an enormous city, whose ruins you can visit. Only the Burana tower remains standing, though it has lost half its height due to an earthquake. You can even climb to the roof of the tower to enjoy a sweeping view over the valley. The historical complex also houses a small museum displaying objects discovered during archaeological excavations in the region, as well as petroglyphs and several monuments to fallen soldiers.

Ala Archa National Park

A favorite destination for mountaineers, the Ala Archa National Park is just half an hour's drive from Bishkek. From the capital, you can admire its steep peaks, the highest of which nearly touch 5,000 meters altitude. The park is open year-round, though it's best visited during the warm season to make the most of hiking. The park is a playground for both beginner and expert mountaineers, with its numerous glaciers, cliffs, and technical summits.

Ala Archa offers several day-hiking options. The easiest follows the Ak Sai River along the valley floor. Another hike through the Adygene Gorge leads to a panoramic viewpoint from which you can observe some of the park's highest peaks, including the Corona. Venturing into the forest, you can visit a memorial, one of two cemeteries dedicated to Soviet-era mountaineers. This one is called the North Star. You can read the stories of climbers in a book dedicated to them, leave a message, and ring a bell as a sign of respect.

In the Ak Sai valley, a marked trail leads toward a stunning waterfall. If you're athletic, try climbing to the Ratsek refuge at 3,300 meters altitude: a round trip in a day is long and the final ascent is very steep, but you'll be welcomed by a magnificent glacier and beautiful mountains at the top.

Issyk Ata and Its Hot Springs

The Issyk Ata valley is popular with locals, who often visit on weekends to relax. Located about an hour and a half from Bishkek, Issyk Ata offers numerous hiking possibilities. But it is particularly sought after for its hot springs. The valley is home to one of Central Asia's oldest sanatoriums. You can enjoy an open-air pool that operates both summer and winter. Its hot thermal water is renowned for its many healing properties.

Kel Tor Lake

In the Kegeti valley, just under two hours' drive from the capital Bishkek, nestles the famous Kel Tor lake. At approximately 2,700 meters altitude, this small natural jewel surprises with its green color, regardless of the weather. The hike is long but well worth the effort; however, we recommend visiting outside summer as it has recently become a very popular weekend destination!

In the other Kegeti valley, you can visit two waterfalls, the first of which is even accessible from the road.

Chon Kemin National Park

A haven of peace, the Chon Kemin National Park, about two and a half hours from Bishkek, is an ideal place to unwind away from crowds. It encompasses several villages. The valley is split in two by a wide river, where you can actually practice rafting. On both sides, broad forests cover the mountainside. Here, locals live off agriculture and livestock. You can enjoy this simple, calm way of life, and go hiking on foot or horseback through Chon Kemin's forests.

The Konorchek Canyons

On the route between Bishkek and Lake Issyk Kul lies Boom Gorge, a red canyon where rock falls are frequent (which indeed gave it its name, "the wicked spirit"). The road is secure so don't worry. The landscapes are breathtaking and worth a brief stop. You can particularly visit the famous Konorchek Canyon, also called the "golden castle". Large formations of red, yellow and orange rock will greet you after about an hour's walk through a narrow valley.

The City of Osh

Surprisingly perhaps, Osh, the capital of southern Kyrgyzstan, is quite accessible for a day trip from Bishkek. By plane, the flight takes less than an hour, leaving you time to visit Osh's city center, its bazaar, and Sulaiman-Too Mountain. The latter, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been an important pilgrimage center for many centuries. You can see numerous caves and sacred sites, in addition to visiting its historical museum.

The Ak-Tuz Valley

Less known to the general public, the Ak Tuz valley, about two hours from Bishkek, offers a magnificent alpine landscape. This village is nearly abandoned today, but the setting is stunning. You can take a day hike to explore the pine forest. Above all, follow the river to admire an enormous fountain emerging from the ground. In winter, it freezes, forming an ice pyramid worthy of the Snow Queen... The Ak Tuz valley also hosts a small, quiet ski resort offering powder for several months.

The Belogorka Valley

It's surely the most beautiful valley near Bishkek. Belogorka, or "white mountain", is located about two hours from Bishkek. The road leading there is quite poor, so few tourists venture there. Yet this valley contains very striking mountains, a steep, dark landscape amid forests. It's a wild place where a few experienced mountaineers come to practice their sport. Belogorka's best-known destination is its massive 60-meter-high waterfall, which you can admire throughout your hike.

The Chunkurchak Valley

Chunkurchak is a valley located right next to Bishkek, about half an hour's drive away. You can meet a few herders with their flocks. The finest hike in the valley leads to a panorama over the city of Bishkek. But that's not all. Few know it, but just below the panoramic viewpoint lie ancient petroglyphs: go search for them! In winter, Chunkurchak also hosts a family ski resort.

The Alamedin Valley

Another valley south of Bishkek, Alamedin once hosted an important sanatorium. The pools have been closed for two years for reconstruction, but the Soviet center remains open for other services. Alamedin is a beautiful valley for picnicking or day hiking. You can particularly visit its famous waterfall. The hike is flat and relatively short, pleasant for families. It's also one of the few hikes accessible in winter. In fact, winter is the most beautiful time to visit Alamedin Gorge, as in winter, the waterfall freezes and the icicles surrounding it plunge you into a fairytale setting...
