Every year, on August 31st, Kyrgyzstan celebrates Independence Day. In 1991, an extraordinary session of the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz Republic adopted a resolution on the "Declaration of Independence of the Kyrgyz Republic." According to this historic act, the Kyrgyz Republic was declared a sovereign, independent democratic state. This marked the end of the Kyrgyz Soviet Socialist Republic as part of the USSR.
Typically, in Bishkek, festivities commence at Ala-Too Square with a competition bringing together creative national teams. On the grounds of equestrian games and throughout city parks, concerts feature pop artists and various amateur groups. The celebration of Kyrgyzstan's Independence Day culminates in a spectacular fireworks display.
