Batken is Kyrgyzstan's southernmost province. This enigmatic region, spanning 16,995 km², remains largely unknown to travellers, yet it offers magnificent nature excursions. Its proximity to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan means several of its territories belong to these neighbouring countries.

A Brief History

Batken was founded on October 12, 1999, in the western zone of Osh province, following an unstable period marked by frequent incursions from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU). Two kidnappings involving young geologists labelled the region as dangerous, making Batken a discouraged destination until 2006. Today, all tension has dissipated, and the region positions itself as a premier destination for discovering Kyrgyzstan's fabulous landscapes.

Batken Today

Although the province does not attract large numbers of tourists, it nevertheless deserves closer attention, if only for its breathtaking scenery. Aigul-Tash mountain is among the region's most renowned attractions. Celebrated for its natural beauty, it also draws visitors for the Ajgul flower that blooms here just once a year, in April. The rocky mountain then adorns itself with magnificent red flowers, creating a unique spectacle of colour.

Moreover, Batken is the preferred destination for trekking enthusiasts. Hiking opportunities are plentiful and can easily be combined with climbing sessions. Beyond its mountains, the plains are equally striking, with vast verdant meadows stretching across the landscape.

From Osh, reaching Batken is straightforward via the regular daily bus service or shared taxi. They depart from the square behind the Alay Hotel next to the equestrian statue. Shared taxis tend to leave quite early in the morning, typically around 7:00 or 8:00 AM.

The Batken region is served by a small airport. In summer, it receives flights to and from Bishkek three times a week. The flight takes 1 hour 10 minutes and costs just over $50.
