Just 40 km south of Bishkek lie the spectacular glacial canyons, jagged peaks, and cascading waterfalls of the Ala Artcha National Park.

Spanning over 200 km² within the Kyrgyz mountains of the Tian Shan Range and rising to altitudes between 1,600 m and 4,875 m, crowned by the Semenov-Tian-Shansky Peak, this alpine park is beloved by both locals and visitors alike. It's a splendid playground for numerous activities including stunning trekking and horseback riding, skiing, and mountaineering.

A Glimpse of History

Established in 1976, Ala Artcha National Park was created to protect and preserve the abundant wildlife and flora that flourish on the site. Ala Artcha actually means "multicolored juniper"—a name born from the many hues of the different juniper varieties that blossom here.

This magnificent reserve is home to a remarkable array of animals including grey marmots, wild goats, roe deer, and stags. It's also one of the few places on Earth where you may have the rare privilege of spotting the elusive snow leopard in its natural habitat.

Exploring the Ala Artcha Valley

A succession of picturesque valleys beautifully forested with pines and spruces, fed by waterfalls, springs, and trout-filled rivers, Ala Artcha Park is the perfect place to take a deep breath of pure air and enjoy a rejuvenating immersion in pristine nature.

At the park entrance, signboards outline the numerous hiking options available. Among the routes on offer, three are particularly popular. Varying in difficulty levels, they all share the beauty of taking you through stunning landscapes. You're free to choose your route based on your abilities and preferences.

The first is an easy 4-hour walk along the river. The second route, leading to a beautiful waterfall, involves a more strenuous 5-hour trek with 700 m of elevation gain. The third demands a full day and is better suited for seasoned trekkers, as it includes steep and rugged sections that can be quite challenging. This hike gains 1,200 m in elevation and brings you to the panoramic viewpoint of the Ak Sai Glacier, from which you'll enjoy an unforgettable panoramic vista. Just below, you'll spot the Ratsek Refuge, which serves as a base camp for experienced mountaineers ready to tackle peaks soaring above 4,500 m. You can spend the night here or pitch your tent if you wish to extend your time in nature.

If you're not inclined toward a lengthy trek, you'll always find a quiet spot to settle, breathe the pure air deeply, and peacefully contemplate this beautiful wild landscape. In summer, the park features leisure facilities, baths, and a sauna.

From Bishkek, you can reach the park by taxi or by shared minibus. Note that buses only drop you at the park entrance, from which you'll still have about 12 km to go to reach the start of the hiking trails.
