Situated just next to the famous Lenin Peak, the Razdelnaya Peak in southern Kirghizistan promises a rewarding experience, breathtaking views and ideal training before tackling higher summits. At 6148m elevation, it is accessible to athletes without specialized technical skills and is a perfect place to acclimatize and test yourself.

Heading toward this "little Lenin" that remains a genuine challenge for mountaineers from all over the world.

A Touch of History

The Lenin Peak (7134m) was discovered during an expedition by a Russian explorer in the Pamir mountains in 1871. He noticed that this pyramid-shaped summit dominated all others, regardless of distance, and remained perpetually snow-covered. Originally named Kaufman, it was considered the highest peak in the region until the discovery of Communist Peak (7495m) in Tajikistan.

Lenin Peak attracted numerous Soviet expeditions, with the first successful ascent in 1928. In 1934, climbers summited for the first time via the north route, deemed easier—that is, from the Alai Valley.

It is precisely on this route where Razdelnaya Peak stands at 6148m elevation, often regarded as a stepping stone before Lenin Peak's summit.

Discovering Razdelnaya Peak Today

Nowadays, Razdelnaya Peak attracts even more expeditions than its neighbor Lenin Peak. It features in most classic Lenin Peak circuits, offering perfect acclimatization before summit day.

Razdelnaya Peak sits just above the third and final camp (6200m) during a Lenin Peak ascent. Low on technical difficulty, this summit allows you to face extreme altitude, acclimatize, test yourself and admire a striking view over the Alai Valley, the Pamir mountains and Lenin Peak.

While a waypoint for some groups, it becomes an objective in itself for less experienced or time-conscious climbers. Its ascent requires just two weeks, compared to at least three weeks for Lenin Peak. It's perfect training terrain for mountaineers not yet ready to tackle 7000m giants, and a splendid adventure to experience in a lifetime!

The summit's difficulty should not be underestimated: while lower than Lenin Peak and not overly technical, with no rock climbing or ice passages required, it remains extremely high, subject to capricious weather conditions and avalanche risk. As with Lenin Peak, you need solid athletic preparation and proper acclimatization before attempting it.

Practical Information

Razdelnaya Peak sits on the border between Kirghizistan and Tajikistan, so you'll need a border permit obtained in advance to reach it. From the city of Osh, expect approximately seven hours' drive to reach the base camp at 3600m elevation. Plan two weeks on-site for the Razdelnaya ascent, possible in July or August.
