Kyrgyzstan in Spring

Although spring is brief, the months of March to May mark the transition from a rigorous winter. Temperatures gradually rise, though night-time frosts persist. If you plan to travel across the country during this period, exercise caution; certain mountain passes may still be blocked by snow, making travel challenging. If you venture to higher elevations, be mindful of avalanche risks. However, May and June prove pleasant, with temperatures ranging between 12 and 27°C.

Kyrgyzstan in Summer

The summer months, from late June to mid-August, can be exceptionally hot, particularly in Bishkek and the Fergana region (south-west of the country), with temperatures potentially reaching 40°C. Average temperatures elsewhere hover around 32°C. Nevertheless, mountain temperatures remain cool, especially in the evening. Warm clothing is recommended if you undertake high-altitude hiking. In the valleys, you may opt for lighter attire.

Kyrgyzstan in Autumn

In the mountains, summer is quite short, with a warming trend emerging in late August. September is a particularly favourable month for visiting the country, not least as it marks the tail-end of the tourist season.

Kyrgyzstan in Winter

From November to February, the country is gripped by Siberian winds with temperatures plummeting to -25°C. Though the cold is dry, at higher elevations the wind is relentless. Travelling during this period can prove difficult and hazardous, with snow-covered roads. However, if winter sports enthuse you, the main draw is skiing or snowboarding. While a few resorts exist near Bishkek, the most compelling remains Karakol, nestled in the Kashka-Suu valley. The resort sits 17 km from town and boasts 5 ski lifts reaching up to 3,040 metres. Off-piste skiing is also possible, with ascents by snowmobile or horseback.
