Land of the Celestial Mountains, Kyrgyzstan unfolds raw and pristine nature, between snow-capped peaks and vast wild expanses, ideal for adventure seekers.

Home to the Celestial Mountains, Kyrgyzstan is the ideal destination for nature lovers and outdoor sports enthusiasts. With its towering mountain ranges, untouched wilderness, and incredible wildlife (including the snow leopard!), Kyrgyzstan has plenty to offer. In fact, more than 90 percent of its territory is covered in mountains, so there's no shortage of hiking opportunities... Especially since its peaks and steppes remain highly wild, inhabited only by a few nomads and their herds. If you're traveling with family or have limited time, don't worry: there are magnificent day hikes to enjoy throughout the country. From arid canyons to dense forests, you can change landscapes from valley to valley without extraordinary effort. Here's our guide to the best day hikes to do near Bishkek during a trip to Kyrgyzstan:

Near Bishkek

Even if you're just passing through Kyrgyzstan's capital, don't worry: a spare day will be enough to fill yourself with emotion and nature. Indeed, Bishkek is just a few kilometers away from the Ala-Too mountains, which rise beautifully to nearly 5,000 meters altitude.

Ala Archa

The best day hikes near Bishkek

It's the largest national park near Kyrgyzstan's capital. Ala Archa is a vast nature reserve located less than half an hour from Bishkek; in fact, its beautiful peaks are visible from the city.

At Ala Archa, you have several options for a day hike. The park's three largest valleys allow you to follow the river, climb to a mountaineers' cemetery and lovely viewpoint, scramble to a waterfall, or, for the more ambitious, reach a glacier. This last hike is not easy, however, as the Ak Sai glacier sits at 3,300 meters altitude, 1,200 meters above the hiking trailhead. Whatever path you choose, you'll be amazed by the park's countless rivers, endless forests, its eternal snows, and dramatic peaks. In fact, Ala Archa is a coveted playground for beginner and expert mountaineers alike, as the park is home to highly technical peaks.

Alamedin

The best day hikes near Bishkek

Another valley located very close to Kyrgyzstan's capital, Alamedin offers easier hikes, less steep and therefore accessible to families and non-athletic individuals. The basic hike leads to a lovely waterfall in just a few hours of gentle walking, through a colorful flowering valley, with a view of an intriguing rock formation in the background. This hike is also doable in winter, when the waterfall freezes over and transforms into a true fairytale setting.

Chunkurchak

The best day hikes near Bishkek

Not far away lies Chunkurchak gorge, a grazing ground for many shepherds and their flocks. Here, nature is more arid, summer and winter alike. A short day hike takes you to a stunning 360-degree viewpoint over Bishkek city. A bonus: just below the viewpoint are petroglyphs, perfect for history enthusiasts!

Belogorka

Belogorka or the "white mountain" is perhaps one of Kyrgyzstan's most beautiful valleys. It's less visited because it's less accessible, with its stone and dirt road. Yet the detour is truly worth it, because here, the landscapes are unlike any other in the country. Towering dark, steeply escarpment peaks line up one behind the other, almost menacingly. You can make out the shapes of dinosaurs or monsters... Snow-capped at the summit, fantastic and intoxicating, these giants will leave you breathless! Most notably, the gorge is home to one of the country's largest waterfalls at nearly 80 meters, and the hike to reach it takes only about an hour on an almost flat trail.

In the Chuy Region

Heading toward Lake Issyk-Kul or the Naryn region? Take a break in one of these valleys to appreciate the immense diversity of Kyrgyzstan's landscape.

Ak-Tuz

Far from tourist circuits, the Ak-Tuz valley is home to a beautiful pine forest and a vast natural spring. In winter, the forest transforms into a snow paradise, where you sink up to your knees, while the spring freezes over and creates a massive ice pyramid, breathtaking to behold. Though the nearby village has been practically deserted since mining ceased, Ak-Tuz has recently seen a small, pleasant family ski station open—quiet and charming.

Kegeti

The best day hikes near Bishkek

About an hour and a half from Bishkek, the Kegeti valley with its idyllic alpine landscape is perfect for a day hike. There are actually two valleys, suited for different hiking levels: the right one leads to two lovely waterfalls with little effort, while the left one takes you to the magnificent Kel-Tor lake, at 2,700 meters altitude. Known for its incredible emerald color, the lake offers a beautiful day hike through thick forest, but you'll need determination to reach it.

Chon Kemin

The best day hikes near Bishkek

The Chon Kemin national park is located approximately 2.5 hours from Kyrgyzstan's capital, on the route between Bishkek and Lake Issyk-Kul. This vast forest, split in two by a river (perfect for rafting enthusiasts...), surrounded by towering peaks and glaciers, is an ideal location for hiking. You can search for mushrooms, explore Chon Kemin's very peaceful forest, spot some wildlife... All within a serene setting conducive to rest.

Konorchek

If you'd prefer to discover a Wild West landscape, go explore the Konorchek canyon. Located in the Boom gorge along this same route connecting the country's east and west, Konorchek canyon is one of Kyrgyzstan's most striking formations. Massive red rock towers loom over this nearly desert valley and leave room for imagination...

Kok Moinok

verified

Still on the canyon front, Kok-Moinok, near the town of Kochkor and Lake Issyk-Kul, is a true favorite. Here, you'll need to thread through narrow passages between rocks like a true explorer to discover the canyon and its multicolored formations.
