Enjoy the Beaches and Water Activities
Issyk Kul Lake is a favorite vacation destination for locals, who come here to swim or relax on the beaches. Its name translates from Kyrgyz as "warm lake": the lake is slightly saline and despite its altitude, it never freezes.
On the northern shore of the lake, particularly near Cholpon Ata, you'll find comfortable and well-equipped beach resorts. You can choose to stay in a yurt, guesthouse, or luxury pension. Some even have private beaches. The northern shore beaches are lively and developed for tourists: you can rent pedal boats, go tubing, try parasailing, explore the lake by kayak... In short, plenty to keep you entertained!
You'll also find several thermal baths and mineral springs where you can unwind and rejuvenate in this magnificent alpine setting.
Journey Through History
Around Issyk Kul Lake, you'll find numerous museums and buildings that bear witness to the past. In Cholpon Ata, you'll have the chance to visit a massive open-air petroglyphic museum, where you can contemplate thousands of engravings, notably of hunting scenes. The town of Cholpon Ata also has a historical museum and a museum of nomadic peoples, plus the famous Ruh Ordo complex located right next to the lake.
To the east of the lake, the city of Karakol also offers interesting historical encounters, notably with its museum downtown, where you can admire a collection of photographs by Ella Maier and objects found in Issyk Kul Lake. This charming town also hosts an orthodox church and an entirely wooden Dungan mosque, as well as a museum dedicated to Russian explorer Nikolai Przhevalski.

Issyk Kul Lake is situated at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains (or Heavenly Mountains), which reach altitudes above 7,000 meters. On either side of the lake, you can admire these magnificent steep and snow-capped peaks. But don't stop there: the Issyk Kul region is a paradise for nature lovers, and you can explore the numerous valleys that surround it. Notable valleys include Grigorievka, Semienovka, Karakol, Altyn Arashan, Djety-Oguz, Barskoon, and Skazka.
Embark on a day hike through one of these valleys. They each offer different and surprising landscapes, so visit them all if you can! You can also explore them by bike, on horseback, or even by quad, if you want a bit more adrenaline. Of course, the region offers magnificent trekking opportunities, with the most famous being the trek to Ala Kul Lake.

The Issyk Kul region is also a perfect place to understand Kyrgyz culture. In the valleys, you'll see many pastures inhabited by semi-nomads who set up their yurts here in summer. You can taste fresh honey or fermented mare's milk, in absolute tranquility.
Most importantly, make a stop at Bokonbayevo, a small traditional village on the southern shore. You can visit a felt workshop and learn how to make the Kyrgyz carpet "shydrak", witness an eagle hunting demonstration, and listen to a traditional music concert. A bit further on, stop by the village of Kyzyl-Tuu. Here, every family makes yurts generation after generation. You can learn all the secrets of their construction and try to assemble a yurt yourself...
In Karakol, you can discover another culture, that of the Dungans, a people of Chinese origin. Be sure to spend a night with a Dungan family to enjoy their delicious cuisine!
