Still little known among skiing enthusiasts, Kyrgyzstan nonetheless has plenty to delight those passionate about winter sports.
With more than 90% of its territory covered in mountains, it comes as no surprise that Kyrgyzstan boasts 83 km of ski slopes in winter. Ski resorts can reach altitudes of 3,048 meters and promise stunning descents through fresh, powder-perfect snow.
Although some resorts still feature older lifts dating from the Soviet era, Kyrgyzstan is working to modernize its facilities to offer greater comfort to visitors. The Soviets were indeed the first to capitalize on the country's alpine potential by building ski resorts during the 1970s and 1980s. One of them, the Karakol Mountain Resort, even served as the official training ground for the Soviet Olympic team during the 1980s.

A Day of Skiing at Karakol
Karakol, to the east of Lake Issyk-Kul, ranks among Kyrgyzstan's leading ski resorts. Located 400 km from Bishkek, you should allow approximately 6 hours of driving to reach the slopes.
Karakol is a charming small town that has developed particularly well for tourism. It offers a wide range of hotels and guesthouses. The ski resort itself sits 7 km from the town, nestled in the Tien Shan mountains. The slopes will take you to altitudes between 2,300 and 3,040 meters, from where you can contemplate unexplored mountains stretching all the way to the Chinese border.
The snow quality delivers incredible sensations that you won't soon forget. Backcountry skiing is perhaps the major highlight of this resort. Untouched slopes lead you through vast powder plateaus and pine forests. Beginners, however, will find plenty to enjoy on the lower terrain, which features wide, well-groomed, easy runs.
