Do you need experience to go horse trekking in Kyrgyzstan?

Horse trekking in Kyrgyzstan: everything you need to know before you go

In general, it is highly recommended to be an experienced rider to go horse trekking in Kyrgyzstan, and for several reasons. First, because the itineraries are quite physically demanding: expect 5 to 6 hours of horse riding per day. Second, the rider must be able to control their horse. Indeed, although Kyrgyz horses are domesticated and trained, you must master galloping, which is part of the trek programme.

Furthermore, if you choose to go horse trekking in a group over several days, it's better to prioritize riders with the same level of horsemanship. Indeed, a novice rider could put experienced riders in difficulty who risk having to wait for them. This is why single-day or multi-day group horse treks are not recommended for novice riders. For your information, the horse trekking circuits we offer are conducted with 3 to 8 participants.

Note!

It is still possible to arrange a one or two-hour horse ride for beginners. In this case, you will need to hire a private guide just for you. They can then choose a horse suited to your level and take you on a horse ride at your own pace without penalizing other riders.

Why go with a guide on a horse trek in Kyrgyzstan?

Horse trekking in Kyrgyzstan: everything you need to know before you go

Whether you're going out for a day or choosing a multi-day horse trek circuit, you'll always be accompanied by a local guide and an English-speaking guide. The local guide, who knows the horses and terrain inside out, will handle all the logistical aspects such as the itinerary and organization of carrying supplies with pack horses. The English-speaking guide, on the other hand, is there to oversee the group of riders. They will also be able to translate all exchanges with the local guide and the families you meet along the way, and give you valuable advice. With their help, you'll also learn more about Kyrgyz horses, the way of life of the inhabitants and nomads, and Kyrgyz culture in general.

Good to know:

Although the guides take care of preparing everything and managing logistics, it's always nice to participate in all aspects of the trip. You can help set up camp, look after the horses… It's also a chance to share good times as a community, bond with fellow enthusiasts and create wonderful memories!

What equipment should you bring on a horse trek in Kyrgyzstan?

During a horse trek in Kyrgyzstan, our teams take care of all equipment for the horses. A helmet will be provided but we do not supply riding clothes. We therefore recommend bringing soft, reasonably high hiking boots with a flat, smooth sole that can be more easily removed from the stirrup in case of a fall. Also remember to pack suitable clothes, including riding trousers to avoid chafing and discomfort around the thighs and buttocks.

Depending on the season during which you travel to Kyrgyzstan, adapt your outfits accordingly. Winter can be harsh, particularly in the mountains, so we recommend bringing warm, covering clothes. If you're traveling in summer, pack light outfits and don't forget sunscreen! In any case, regardless of the season, bring a raincoat in case of rain.

As for camping, all equipment is included in the price of our circuits. We'll provide you with a tent, sleeping bag (you're welcome to bring your own), duvet, ground mat, camping tables and chairs, portable shower and toilet tent. Finally, remember that you must avoid suitcases and opt instead for a soft backpack for practical reasons. Also pack a small day backpack.
