In south-west Kyrgyzstan, Jalal-Abad is the capital of its namesake province. Situated close to the Uzbekistan border, this country's 3rd largest city has developed along the foothills of the Babash-Ata massif at the north-eastern edge of the Ferghana Valley, following the course of the Kugart River.

Encircled by mountains and fertile valleys, it is renowned for its mineral springs and spa centres, and enjoys a relaxed atmosphere shaped by the students who populate its universities. You'll discover its charm wandering along tree-lined avenues and exploring the surrounding region brimming with attractions.

A Glimpse into History

The Persian suffix "abad" frequently appears in Asian city names, attached to the name of the person who founded the settlement. Jalal-Abad (also spelled Jalalabad, Dzhalal-Abad or Jalalabat) is said to derive its name from Jalal ad Din, who became famous for opening numerous chaikanas (tea houses) and caravanserais that welcomed travellers. This explanation gains significance when you learn that, situated on one of the main Silk Road routes across Kyrgyzstan, Jalal-Abad has cultivated a long tradition of hospitality for millennia. Merchants, pilgrims visiting the region's sacred sites, and those seeking the healing properties of its spring waters all made stops here, building its reputation. Its Hozret-Ayub-Paighambar thermal station was once believed to cure leprosy.

Even today, several spa centres built during the Soviet era offer treatments for various chronic ailments, while the therapeutic mineral waters, bottled and distributed, bring their benefits throughout the country and beyond.

Exploring Jalal-Abad

Like many former Soviet cities, Jalalabad's main thoroughfare was named "Lenin Street." From that past, the city retains numerous fountains and, on its central square, an extraordinarily striking golden statue of Vladimir Ilyich—unusual because he is depicted seated rather than standing.

Nearby, you'll appreciate the lively café scene and may find yourself mingling with university students over savoury meat dumplings and a cold beer. Or continue your stroll to the grand bazaar, where as you wander the aisles you can sample warm sesame seed bread or meat pastries (samsy, kashan). Near the bazaar, a shop sells exclusively local walnut products, the region's signature ingredient, including an exquisite preserve made with green fruit and honey. The city centre also houses museums offering insights into the history and culture of this part of the country.

The celebrated Jalal-Abad thermal spa sits perched at 975 metres altitude on Ayub-Tau mountain, 3km from the city. A visit rewards you with remarkable views over the surroundings, and if you wish, you can try a mud bath and sample some rejuvenating mineral water.

Jalal-Abad region abounds with attractions. Near Arslanbob, you can walk through the world's oldest and largest natural walnut forests. Legend has it that Alexander the Great brought walnuts from here back to Macedonia.

Another magnificent site, the Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve and its stunning alpine lake surrounded by wild fruit trees and snow-capped peaks, offers excellent opportunities for trekking, or simply relax by the water to savour the landscape.

Finally, if you're passionate about history, don't miss the 10,000 petroglyphs adorning Saimaluu-Tash mountain.

From Bishkek, buses and shared taxis depart from the western (or new) station.

In Kyrgyzstan, train travel is often cheaper and considerably more enjoyable than other transport options. Moreover, it's less prone to disruption from adverse weather. The Kyrgyz rail network offers limited services. In the north, the line connects Bishkek to Balykchy on Lake Issyk-Kul. In the south, it links Andijan in Uzbekistan to Osh and Jalal-Abad.
