A majestic Kyrgyz summit, Khan Tengri Peak (7010m) is one of the world's most beautiful mountains. Located on the border with Kazakhstan and China in the eastern part of the country, this king of peaks has captivated generations of mountaineers, though few manage to reach its capricious and technical summit. Let's explore this natural wonder.

A Glimpse of History

Khan Tengri means "king of paradise," "lord of the skies" or "lord of spirits." Its summit, formed by a perfect pyramid, towers majestically over the glacial valley surrounding it, never ceasing to fascinate. The Kazakhs call it "Kantau," "the mountain of blood," because of the red hue its glacier takes on at sunrise or sunset.

First summited in 1931 by a team of Ukrainian mountaineers, notably Mikhail Pogrebetsky, Khan Tengri Peak was long considered insurmountable. Discovered in the mid-19th century by the great Russian explorer Semionov Tian-Chanski, it later attracted explorer Merzbacher in the early 20th century (it was during this expedition that he discovered the lake bearing his name). Upon arriving before the imposing marble mountain, Merzbacher reportedly said that its ascent was impossible.

Discovering Khan Tengri Peak

Khan Tengri is one of three 7000m summits in Kyrgyzstan. With a disputed altitude of 6995m (excluding the glacier on its summit) or 7010m (including the glacier), it ranks among the five giants of Central Asia and the Snow Leopard Award, bestowed on mountaineers who summit all mountains over 7000m in the post-Soviet region (Ismail Somoni Peak or Communism, Jengish Chokosu or Pobeda Peak, Lenin Peak, Korzhenevskaya, and Khan Tengri). Also known as the "little K2" for its resemblance and technical difficulty, Khan Tengri is the most northerly of the 7000m peaks.

Khan Tengri Peak sits between two countries, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, close to China as well, on the northern branch of the Inylchek glacier. This glacier is one of the world's largest, stretching 60km in length with an average altitude of 4100m. Just meters from Khan Tengri Peak stands Pobeda Peak (Victory), also called Jengish Chokosu, the highest summit in Kyrgyzstan and the post-Soviet region.

A six-day trek leads to Khan Tengri Peak's base camp. Through a completely isolated and wild region, this trek takes hikers across the moraine and ice of the immense Inylchek, whose only sound shatters the enchanting silence of this mystical place. On the path to this legendary summit lies the mysterious Merzbacher Lake, which disappears beneath the ice each year in profound secrecy. With an average altitude above 4000m, several major rivers to cross, and crevasses to avoid, this trek demands good physical preparation. The base camp is also accessible by helicopter.

There are nine routes leading to the summit of this majestic and forbidding mountain, all highly technical and dangerous.

Practical Information

Located at the far eastern edge of Kyrgyzstan, on the border with Kazakhstan and China, Khan Tengri lies in a border zone subject to military controls. To venture to its base or attempt its summit, you must obtain a border permit in advance, which you'll need to show at two military checkpoints.

The best season to visit the Khan Tengri area is summer, in July and August. The base camp is generally open from July 5 to August 30, though this depends on weather conditions. By late August, snowfall becomes significant, potentially delaying return on foot or by helicopter.

Khan Tengri is a very difficult, technical, and dangerous summit, subject to frequent avalanches and capricious weather conditions. It is therefore accessible only to experienced mountaineers. However, it is possible to reach the base camp by helicopter, or by trek for strong hikers.
