The freshwater lake of Sary-Chelek is one of the most spectacular natural sites in Kyrgyzstan. Located 500 km from Bishkek and 300 km from Osh, Sary-Chelek is an ideal destination for trekking deep into unspoiled nature, or simply escaping the rhythms of everyday life.

A Touch of History

The lake was formed approximately 10,000 years ago by a massive landslide. In 1959, the site was surveyed for scientific research and protection of its wildlife and flora. It remained inaccessible during the Soviet era.

A local legend tells of a beekeeper tending his hives somewhere along the lake's shore. One fateful day, a bucket brimming with honey reportedly spilled into the waters, lending them a honey-like hue. This inspired the beekeeper to name it Sary-Chelek—meaning "golden bucket" in Kyrgyz.

Others believe the lake's name derives from the trees that frame its waters. Come autumn, these trees blaze in magnificent shades of gold and orange, casting a warm, amber reflection across the lake's surface.

Sary-Chelek Lake Today

Fed by the Tuskaul River, the lake sits at approximately 1,873 meters above sea level. It ranks as Kyrgyzstan's second-deepest lake. Stretching 7.5 km in length with widths ranging from 150 to 350 meters, its deepest point plunges to 234 meters.

Access to the lake presents a moderate challenge, approachable only from the north or south. The northern route offers an exceptional trekking experience across the Talas Mountains, where you'll navigate high mountain passes and traverse dramatic canyons.

Alternatively, approximately 20 km to the south, you can reach the lake via the village of Arkyt. Sary-Chelek is a naturalist's dream destination. The region harbors over 1,000 plant species, 160 bird species, and 34 mammal species including deer, bears, lynx, and wolves.

Experienced trekkers will find themselves captivated by Sary-Chelek's breathtaking scenery. For those preferring an alternative pace, horseback exploration is also available.

Public transportation options connect to Sary-Chelek Lake. Take the bus to Tash-Komur through Arkyt. From there, board another bus at Kara-Jigat heading to Sary-Chelek. The journey takes approximately 2 hours. Hitching is also a viable option along this route.
