Who are the Dungans?
The Dungans are a Chinese ethnic group of the Muslim faith. Their official language is Dungan. It is a Chinese dialect whose vocabulary draws partly from Arabic, Persian and Turkish. The Dungan population is estimated at just over 100,000 inhabitants, more than half of whom live in Kyrgyzstan. They originate from China (around Gansu Province and the Ningxia Autonomous Region), but emigrated to Central Asia following the Hui Minorities War.
Upon settling in Kyrgyzstan, the Dungans preserved much of their culture and maintain a distinct identity from the Kyrgyz people. This is evident in the architecture of their villages, which resembles Chinese style. This is notably the case with the famous Dungan mosque located in Karakol.

When interacting with the Dungans, you will surely notice that they speak their own language, "Dungan." This language is very similar to the Chinese dialect known as Shaanxi. The only difference is that instead of using the four tones typical of the Chinese language, Dungan uses only three.
