Big Almaty Lake is a natural alpine reservoir located in the Ile-Alatau National Park, just 15 km south of downtown Almaty in Kazakhstan. This high-altitude lake nestled amid the mountains sits at 2,511 meters above sea level.

From the northern shore, you can spot Peak Sovetov (4,317 meters) to the southwest, Peak Ozerny (4,110 m) to the south, and Peak Turist (3,954 m) to the southwest—all part of the Tian Shan massif on the Kazakhstan side.

Fed by glacial waters, Big Almaty Lake stretches 1.6 km in length and nearly one kilometer in width, with a depth of 40 meters. Its turquoise waters blend perfectly with the green forests cascading down steep slopes, creating a remarkable vista.

Access to the lake is strictly controlled because it serves as Almaty's primary natural water reservoir. A large dam has been constructed at the lake's northern end, though it fortunately does not detract from the landscape. Authorities maintain vigilant oversight to prevent any risk of water pollution or contamination.

It's possible to reach Big Almaty Lake from downtown Almaty. Tourist buses depart every morning from Almaty Stadium heading to the lake. The journey takes approximately one hour through the mountains.
