Shymbulak, sometimes spelled Chimbulak, is a Kazakhstani ski resort located 25 km from central Almaty, in the upper reaches of the Medeu valley. The domain stretches between 2,260 m and 3,200 m elevation on the flanks of the Zaiilisky Alatau, with Talgar (3,620 m) as its signature peak. Though part of Kazakhstan, the resort ranks among the winter getaways frequented from neighboring Kyrgyzstan, particularly on combined circuits bridging both countries.

In summer, the cable car remains operational and provides access to hiking trails toward Bogdanovich Glacier, Talgar Lakes, and various valley viewpoints. The resort also offers mountain-bike circuits and picnic areas above Medeu.

The ski season typically runs from late November through early April, with steadier snowfall from January through March. January and February offer the best conditions but also the coldest temperatures (often subzero at elevation). For hiking and summer cable car use, plan for June through September, when high-altitude trails are clear.

From Kyrgyzstan, access proceeds via the Korday border crossing then by road to Almaty (4 to 5 hours).
